Важным этапом в их эволюции стало внедрение метода интрацитоплазматической инъекции сперматозоидов, революционизировавшего подход к самым сложным случаям мужского бесплодия. Еще одним значительным прорывом в области вспомогательных репродуктивных технологий стала разработка метода витрификации — ультрабыстрого замораживания биологического материала — и ряда других методов, способствовавших в итоге появлению в мире первых специализированных центров по лечению бесплодия. В 1987 г. Министерство здравоохранения СССР официально одобрило применение экстракорпорального оплодотворения в медицинской практике. Развитие метода стало возможным благодаря стремительному прогрессу в области репродуктивной медицины, глубокому изучению вопросов бесплодия и многолетнему опыту специалистов из различных медицинских сфер.
